Why PACT for a work injury

Most physiotherapists treat the injury. We treat the injury and the claim. Andrew Ellis, our founder and principal physiotherapist, draws on a background as a Senior Rehabilitation Consultant and Workplace Health and Safety Advisor, with extensive experience in occupational rehabilitation and providing injury management advice to insurers and employers. That experience changes how your recovery is run.

It means we understand what your insurer and case manager need to see, how a Certificate of Capacity drives the decisions on your claim, and how to plan a return to work that is safe and durable rather than rushed. Andrew is an AHPRA registered and SIRA approved physiotherapist. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Exercise Science), a Master of Physiotherapy, is completing an Executive MBA, and brings 16 years of experience across the SIRA NSW workers compensation scheme.

He works closely with insurers, case managers and employers, so your treatment sits inside the bigger picture of your claim, not separate from it.

For injured workers

What we do for you

From your first appointment we get moving on both fronts at once: assessing and treating your injury, and managing the parts of your claim that usually cause delay and stress. You focus on recovery, we handle the system around it.

On an accepted claim there is no gap and nothing for you to pay at the time of your appointment. An accepted NSW workers compensation claim also comes with pre approved physiotherapy, so in many cases we can start your treatment without waiting on further approval. We confirm the exact arrangement for your individual claim with your insurer or case manager first.

  • Rapid assessment and hands on treatment from day one
  • We manage the complexities of your claim so you do not have to
  • We communicate directly with your insurer and case manager
  • We keep your paperwork, including your Certificate of Capacity, up to speed with your treating doctor
  • Same day clinical reports when your insurer needs them
  • A staged return to work planned around your real capacity
  • No gap and direct insurer billing on accepted claims
  • If you need treatment beyond the pre approved sessions, we lodge the Allied Health Treatment Request for you
Your entitlements

Pre approved sessions and no gap, explained simply

If you have an accepted NSW workers compensation claim, we can usually start your physiotherapy without waiting for further approval. Where your injury has not been treated by a physiotherapist before and treatment begins within three months of your injury, SIRA allows up to eight sessions before any further approval is needed.

After that, we simply send your insurer an Allied Health Treatment Request setting out your progress and proposed plan, and continue your care once it is approved. We handle that paperwork for you so there is no gap in your treatment. The insurer decides on the request, so we cannot promise the outcome, but we make the case clearly and keep things moving.

Throughout, reasonably necessary treatment is billed directly to your insurer, so there is no gap fee and nothing for you to pay at your appointment. Every claim is a little different. The number of pre approved sessions is not universal and depends on your situation, so we confirm your exact arrangement with your insurer or case manager before we begin.

For employers

Working with employers and insurers

If you are an employer, a return to work coordinator or a case manager, you are dealing with someone who has sat on your side of the table. Andrew's background as a Senior Rehabilitation Consultant and WHS Advisor means clear communication, prompt reporting and return to work planning that holds up under scrutiny.

We are responsive, we report on time, and we plan suitable duties around what a worker can actually do. The detail of how we partner with employers sits on its own page.

Schemes

Schemes we handle

We work across the NSW workers compensation system and beyond. For workers compensation that means icare NSW and its scheme agents EML, Allianz, Gallagher Bassett, QBE and DXC. We also treat workers under WorkCover Queensland and Comcare for federal government employees.

If your injury came from a motor accident rather than work, we handle CTP claims too, including NRMA, QBE, GIO and Allianz. Not sure which scheme you sit under? Get in touch and we will help you work it out.

Outside the area

Telehealth for workers further afield

If you are a worker outside our local area and you need speedy diagnosis and advice, we offer telehealth physiotherapy through PACT Virtual Care, available across Australia. It is a fast way to get assessed, get a plan and get moving while in person care is arranged.

Under workers compensation, telehealth is conditional. SIRA generally requires it to be combined with in person services unless your insurer has pre approved treatment delivered solely by telehealth, to be by videoconference where available, and to be consented to by you, your physiotherapist and your insurer. We assess whether it is clinically appropriate case by case and arrange any approval your insurer requires.

Cost

No out of pocket cost

On an accepted workers compensation or CTP claim, your treatment is billed directly to the insurer. There is no gap and nothing for you to pay at your appointment, and we handle the invoicing for you. If you are a private patient, see our fees.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Do I have to pay anything for physio on a workers comp claim?
On an accepted NSW workers compensation claim, reasonably necessary treatment is billed directly to your insurer, so there is no gap fee and nothing for you to pay at your appointment. This applies to accepted claims and approved treatment only, not to pending or declined claims. We confirm your arrangement with your insurer or case manager before we begin.
How many physio sessions am I approved for?
Where your injury has not been treated by a physiotherapist before and treatment begins within three months of your injury, SIRA allows up to eight sessions on an accepted claim before any further approval is needed. The number is not universal. If treatment starts more than three months after injury it can be up to three sessions, and a returning practitioner is one. We always confirm the exact figure with your insurer or case manager for your claim.
What happens after the pre approved sessions run out?
If you need more treatment, we submit an Allied Health Treatment Request to your insurer. It sets out your current presentation, your progress, any barriers to recovery and the proposed plan, including the number of further sessions and the timeframe. Once the insurer approves it, treatment continues with no cost to you. We handle this paperwork so there is no gap in your care. The insurer decides on the request, so approval is not guaranteed.
What is a Certificate of Capacity and do you complete it?
A Certificate of Capacity, also called a Certificate of Fitness, is the medical certificate completed by your nominated treating doctor. It describes your injury, your current capacity for work and the treatment you need, and it is how your doctor communicates with the insurer. We work alongside your doctor so our physiotherapy supports the plan in your certificate. You can read more on our Certificate of Capacity page.
Which insurers and schemes do you work with?
For workers compensation we work with icare NSW and its scheme agents EML, Allianz, Gallagher Bassett, QBE and DXC, and we also treat WorkCover Queensland claims. For motor accident CTP claims we work with NRMA, QBE, GIO and Allianz. If you are unsure which scheme applies to you, contact us and we will help.
Can I do my workers comp physio by telehealth?
Telehealth can be available under workers compensation but it is restricted. SIRA generally requires it to be combined with in person services unless your insurer has pre approved telehealth only treatment, to be by videoconference where available, and to be consented to by you, your physiotherapist and your insurer. We assess whether it is clinically appropriate and arrange any required approval. Telehealth across Australia is offered through PACT Virtual Care.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physio on workers comp in NSW?
No. Under SIRA rules you can see a physiotherapist without a GP referral, and the first eight sessions with an approved claim are pre approved. You will need a claim number, and a Certificate of Capacity comes from your nominated treating doctor for the claim itself, but treatment does not wait for a referral.
Can I choose my own physio for my workers comp claim?
Yes. In NSW you have the right to choose your own SIRA approved physiotherapist. Your employer or insurer can suggest a clinic, but the choice is yours, and you can change physios during your claim. If you move to PACT mid claim, we take over with one pre approved session and handle the approval paperwork from there.
