Kneecap pain (runner's knee)

Aching around the front of the kneecap with stairs, squatting and running.

The condition

What it is

Patellofemoral pain, often called runner's knee, is pain around or behind the kneecap. It comes from how the kneecap loads and moves against the thigh bone, and it is common with running, stairs and squatting, especially after a change in activity.

Signs

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

This usually settles well with the right program. We assess the knee, hip and how you move, settle the pain, then build strength through the hip and thigh so the kneecap loads better. We adjust your running or training so it can recover.

  • Knee and hip assessment
  • Hands on therapy
  • Hip and thigh strengthening
  • Training load advice

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before you book

Do I need to stop running?
Often not completely. We usually adjust the load rather than stop, and build the strength that lets you run with less pain.
How much will it cost?
Initial physiotherapy is $165 for 60 minutes and follow ups are $142 for 40 minutes. Approved workers comp and CTP appointments are billed directly to the insurer.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book privately. Referrals are required for Medicare Chronic Disease Management plans and most claim pathways.
Can it be managed by telehealth?
Many problems can be assessed and guided well by telehealth through PACT Virtual Care, with hands on treatment added at the Miranda clinic when it helps.
