The condition

What it is

De Quervain's tenosynovitis is irritation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It is common with repetitive thumb and wrist use, and often shows up in new parents from lifting a baby. It causes pain when gripping or turning the wrist.

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

We settle the irritated tendons with hands on therapy, advise on splinting and how to lift and use the thumb with less load, and build a graded program to restore tolerance. We adjust the daily tasks driving it so it can calm down.

  • Wrist and thumb assessment
  • Soft tissue release
  • Splinting and load advice
  • Graded strengthening

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before you book

I am a new parent, how do I rest it?
Full rest is hard with a baby. We focus on lower load ways to lift and carry, simple supports, and a gentle program so it can settle around your day.
How much will it cost?
Initial physiotherapy is $165 for 60 minutes and follow ups are $142 for 40 minutes. Approved workers comp and CTP appointments are billed directly to the insurer.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book privately. Referrals are required for Medicare Chronic Disease Management plans and most claim pathways.
Can it be managed by telehealth?
Many problems can be assessed and guided well by telehealth through PACT Virtual Care, with hands on treatment added at the Miranda clinic when it helps.
