Hip flexor strain

Pain at the front of the hip with lifting the knee, sprinting or kicking.

By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026

The condition

What it is

The hip flexors are the muscles at the front of the hip that lift the thigh. They can be strained by sprinting, kicking or sudden effort, or become tight and sore from long sitting. This causes pain at the front of the hip or groin with certain movements.

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

We assess the hip to confirm what is involved, ease the muscle with hands on therapy and dry needling, then build a graded stretching and strengthening program. We guide your return to running or sport so the load comes back at a sensible pace.

  • Hip assessment
  • Soft tissue release and dry needling
  • Graded stretch and strengthening

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before you book

Is my desk job making this worse?
Long sitting keeps the hip flexors short and can feed the problem. We pair treatment with movement and a setup that helps.
How much will it cost?
Initial physiotherapy is $165 for 60 minutes and follow ups are $142 for 40 minutes. Approved workers comp and CTP appointments are billed directly to the insurer.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book privately. Referrals are required for Medicare Chronic Disease Management plans and most claim pathways.
Can it be managed by telehealth?
Many problems can be assessed and guided well by telehealth through PACT Virtual Care, with hands on treatment added at the Miranda clinic when it helps.
