Mid back pain

Pain and stiffness between the shoulder blades, often from posture and desk work.

By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026

The condition

What it is

Mid back, or thoracic, pain sits between the shoulder blades and around the ribs. It is commonly linked to posture, desk work and long hours at a screen, and it can also cause a tight, restricted feeling when breathing deeply or turning.

Signs

Signs and symptoms

Everyone is different, but these are common with mid back pain. You may have some and not others.

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

We assess the mid back and ribs, then ease the stiffness with mobilisation and soft tissue work, including dry needling where it helps. A program to improve posture, movement and strength keeps it loose, and we set up your workstation to take the strain off.

  • Mid back and rib assessment
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Soft tissue release and dry needling
