Neck pain

Stiff, aching or sharp neck pain from posture, strain, joints or muscle tension.

By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026

The condition

What it is

Neck pain is very common and can come from the joints, discs, muscles and nerves of the neck, or simply from long hours in one position. Most neck pain is not serious and settles well with the right assessment and a clear plan.

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

We assess what is driving your neck pain, then combine hands on therapy, joint mobilisation and dry needling to ease it, with exercises to restore movement and strength. We also look at posture and your workstation so it is less likely to return.

  • Movement and posture assessment
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Soft tissue release and dry needling
  • Strength and control exercises

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before you book

Should I get a scan for neck pain?
Most neck pain does not need imaging. We assess first, and only suggest a scan if something in your history or examination points to it.
How much will it cost?
Initial physiotherapy is $165 for 60 minutes and follow ups are $142 for 40 minutes. Approved workers comp and CTP appointments are billed directly to the insurer.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book privately. Referrals are required for Medicare Chronic Disease Management plans and most claim pathways.
Can it be managed by telehealth?
Many problems can be assessed and guided well by telehealth through PACT Virtual Care, with hands on treatment added at the Miranda clinic when it helps.
