Frozen shoulder

Progressive shoulder stiffness and pain that limits movement, then slowly eases.

By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026

The condition

What it is

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is when the capsule around the shoulder joint becomes inflamed and tight. It causes pain and a steady loss of movement, and it tends to move through painful, stiff and thawing phases over many months.

Signs

Signs and symptoms

Everyone is different, but these are common with frozen shoulder. You may have some and not others.

Treatment

How physiotherapy helps

Treatment is matched to the phase. We ease pain in the early stage, then use mobilisation and a graded stretching and strengthening program to restore movement as it settles. We keep things at a level your shoulder tolerates so it does not flare.
