Rotator cuff injuries
Shoulder pain and weakness from strain, tears or wear of the rotator cuff tendons.
By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026
What it is
The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons that control and stabilise the shoulder. It can be irritated, overloaded or torn through injury or gradual wear, leading to pain and weakness, especially with overhead movement.
Signs and symptoms
Everyone is different, but these are common with rotator cuff injuries. You may have some and not others.
How physiotherapy helps
Most rotator cuff problems respond well to a structured program. We assess the shoulder, settle the pain with hands on therapy and dry needling, then progress targeted strengthening that rebuilds the cuff. We guide load carefully so the tendon can recover.
- Shoulder assessment
- Pain easing hands on therapy
- Progressive rotator cuff strengthening
- Load and activity guidance
