Sciatica
Leg pain, tingling or weakness that travels from the back down the leg via the sciatic nerve.
By Andrew Ellis, AHPRA registered physiotherapist · Reviewed July 2026
What it is
Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, following the path of the sciatic nerve. It is usually caused by irritation of a nerve in the lower back, often from a disc or joint, and it can come with tingling, numbness or weakness.
Signs and symptoms
Everyone is different, but these are common with sciatica. You may have some and not others.
How physiotherapy helps
Most sciatica settles without surgery. We assess to confirm the source, ease the pressure on the nerve with hands on therapy and specific positions and movements, and progress a program that restores movement and strength. We coordinate imaging and medical input if needed.
- Nerve and back assessment
- Treatment to offload the nerve
- Nerve mobility and strength exercises
- GP coordination if warranted
